The dynamic curves and continuous lines of the 520 West 28th Street luxury condominium building are unmistakable hallmarks of Zaha Hadid’s celebrated architectural style. Inspired by the hand-rubbed finishes and organic forms of this Chelsea landmark, ORE created a trellis and undulating planter retention edge that echo the building’s aesthetic. Featuring a natural zinc patina, the courtyard garden structures create a harmonious dialogue with the High Line, which passes directly by the site.
ORE produced a banded-mesh trellis that fit the building’s design to support a wall of greenery in the courtyard. To establish planting beds on a sloped, rolling patio, we took an innovative approach to leveling the retention edge that accommodates the irregular terrain. Structural posts, concealed within sleeves built for the site, allow for level planter edges that appear to float up and down with the changing grade. The system is placed with hidden fasteners to integrate with the building’s sinuous lines.
