Transforming the rooftop of this residential building in Manhattan’s Battery Park City neighborhood posed significant challenges. Brought in as part of a comprehensive renovation, landscape architects at Hollander Design were tasked with creating a human-centered amenity space that met local zoning requirements of 75% green coverage on the shared terrace. ORE played a key role in executing the details of their award-winning approach, which ultimately set a new standard for rooftop design.
“Tribeca Green demonstrates that luxury and sustainability can coexist, even with the challenges posed by redeveloping older buildings. By maintaining 75% green roof coverage, supporting native plants, and fostering biodiversity, this project sets a new standard for urban living. It challenges the status quo of rooftop design and reimagines what is possible for amenity spaces in dense urban environments.”

Another feature of this project was an adaptation of our FūSE edging system that allowed for a change of elevation along the planter edge. This was done to accommodate soil mounding to support full-size birch trees in a graduated, natural-looking way.
We also made custom, raised planters to lift plants to eye level. All the elements combine beautifully to provide the sheltered, lush feeling of a ground-level garden with gorgeous, 17th-floor views of the Hudson River.
