ORE worked with our frequent collaborator, Hollander Design, in their effort to maximize space for relaxing and entertaining on this penthouse rooftop overlooking the Hudson River in Greenwich Village. The goal for this terrace design was to skillfully combine green space and seating in a limited area, allowing for a smooth transition from the adjacent living room to the terrace. To do this, we developed an integrated planter system with conversation pits, an outdoor dining area, and metal seating with cushion storage, all in a mottled zinc finish.

Originally constructed in 1912 as a printing warehouse and reimagined as a residential building, this location is an excellent example of adaptive reuse and blending of historical and contemporary architecture. As Elle Décor describes it in an article featuring the penthouse:

“It’s this synergy of art, play, and the great outdoors that makes the residence the ultimate vacation home and party spot. From their lofty terrace, the homeowners can peer over New York Harbor, catch views out to the Statue of Liberty—and garnish their libations: “We have culinary herbs that are all tucked within the boxes,” explains Stephen Eich of Hollander Design. “We always joke that it was their cocktail garden—they could go and muddle some mint or pick some basil before cocktail hour or dinner.”
